Abstract

This is a theoretical paper aimed at highlighting the roles of the teacher in enhancing effective classroom communication to achieve functional primary education in Nigeria. Efforts were made to look at some related concepts such as communication, classroom communication, features of classroom communication, effective communication, functional education, relationship between effective communication and functional education. The paper revealed a positive relationship between communication and functional education. When there is effective communication, a communication that will guarantee the students learning, then the classroom teaching will be functional. As the initiator of classroom communication, efforts were made to highlight the roles of the teacher that will enhance effective communication to achieve functional primary education for sustainable development. Among other roles are that the teachers should always make use of relevant and appropriate instructional materials in teaching, always involving the students in classroom communication and teach the subject related to teacher’s area of specialization. It was concluded that if the roles are adhered to, functional primary education will be achieved. It therefore suggested among others that the government should equip schools with teaching aids that will help the teacher teach and make classroom communicational to achieve functional primary education for sustainable development.
