Films are essentially an affective art form. Through an engaging story, sympathetic characters, and the presentation of a cinematic world by audio-visual means, films seek to elicit emotions in viewers. This study examined film aesthetics: beyond the promise of narratives. The study was guided by three objectives which included to examine film aesthetics beyond the promise of narratives, examine film narratives as it relates to film aesthetics and examine aesthetics vs narratives beyond the promise of narratives. The study reviewed the concept of film aesthetics, film narratives, aesthetics vs narratives beyond the promise of narratives, amongst others. The findings of the study provide insight into the relation between aesthetics and affect in film. In particular, they highlight the importance of style in terms of both aesthetics and film mood. First, ratings of low-level stylistic features were more consistent than ratings of high-level features.
