IMPACT OF WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCEOF CONSUMER GOODS COMPANIES IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examines the impact of working capital management on financial performance of consumer goods companies in Nigeria. This research study adopts descriptive research design and ex-post facto research design. The population of the study comprised the 25 consumer goods companies listed at the Nigerian Exchange Group, as at December 202 2. Using purposive sampling 16 listed companies in the industry which have complete data till at least 2017 in the Nigerian Exchange Group Fact Book were used. Panel Data were extracted using secondary source from the published financial statements of the firms listed in Nigerian Exchange group from 201 3 - 202 2 . Data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that net working capital had positively and significant impact on return of assets of consumer goods companies in Nigeria, Creditors payment period and Inventory conversion period had negative and significant impact on return of assets of consumer goods companies. Only Debtor’s collection period had a negative and non-significant impact on return of assets of selected consumer goods sector in Nigeria. The study concluded that net working capital, creditors payment period and inventory conversion period havesignificant impact on the financial performance of consumer goods companies in Nigeria. It was recommended that management of selected consumer goods companies should pay close attention and focus to sound management of their working capital management components as they influenced their financial performance of consumer goods companies in Nigeria.
