OVERVIEW OF STOCK MARKET PERFORMANCE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA: PRE AND POST ERA EXPERIENCE

Abstract

This study focusses on examining the stock market performance during Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria in pre and post Covid-19 Era. Measure of stock market performance which include: Market Capitalization, Share Turnover Ratio, Number of Listed Companies and Total value of Shares Trade; Indicators of Bond Markets such as Ratio of Private sector Bond to GDP, Government Bond Yields and New Corporate Bonds Issued; Capital Market measures: Number of Listed Securities, Market Capitalization Ratio and Value of Shares Traded; Money Market Indicators: Minimum Lending Rate, Prime Lending Rate, Money Policy Rate, Inter-Bank Call Rate, Savings Deposit and Treasury Bill; and Financial System Performance Indicators: Total number of Institutions Listed, Price of Financial Services and Herfindahl Index was utilized in the study and each of the variable assessed in pre Covid-19 era, during and after covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria. Evidence from the main findings shows that stock markets, bond markets, capital markets, money markets and financial system was adversely affected by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria. Covid-19 pandemic has caused various economic woes to the Nigerian economy and have in particular slow the performance of the Nigerian stock market and the overall financial system. However, policies such as government enhancement of institutional quality, solving Nigerian security challenges and encouragement of the local industries so as to build a strong economic hub that will attract more foreign investors and enhance the stock market performance.
