INFLUENCE OF COMMUNICATION PATTERNS ON ADMINISTRATIVE PERFORMANCE OF PRINCIPALS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN UMUAHIA NORTH LGA, ABIA STATE

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the influence of communication patterns on administrative performance of principals in public secondary schools in Umuahia North LGA. Abia state. The study adopted a descriptive design, three research questions were raised to guide the study with three null hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.  Population of the study comprised 579 (20 principals and 559 teachers). A sample size of 110 were randomly selected.  A 30- item questionnaire was designed and validated by three experts. Data was collected using Communication Pattern and Administrative Performance Questionnaire (CPAPQ). Cronbach alpha was used to determine the reliability test which yielded an index of 0.89. Data collected from the field were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The results of the study revealed that communication pattern used by the principals to a high extent influences their administrative performance with a pooled mean of 2.99, that principals use of chain communication pattern in relating to their sub- ordinates has a high extent influence on their administrative performance with a pooled mean of 2.96.   It was recommended that appropriate adoption and use of circle and chain patterns rightfully will help school administrators to maintain quality communication flow and conducive environment for improvement of principals’ performance for administration effectiveness.
