The need to reposition basic education for sustainable development through developing competencies among students to enable them develops life skills capable of addressing a number health issues cannot be overemphasized. The effectiveness of such education depends on the decision to review the content and approaches of the present education system in Nigeria. This effort is likely to provide Nigeria with the required information that seeks to address challenges in the health care system. This paper, therefore, aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s basic education for sustainable development through health. From a population of 3,238 teachers and 160 principals in the government owned schools in Abia State, 50 principals and 600 teachers were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data collection was by personal hand delivery using 5 research assistants. Data were analysed using mean and one-way ANOVA conducted at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that there is a significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female teachers on sources of drinking water in schools in Abia State. The study showed that, there is no significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female teachers on availability of sanitation facilities in schools in Abia State. The findings indicated that, there is a significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female teachers on methods of refuse disposal in schools in schools in Abia State. The paper recommends that school authorities should make efforts to ensure that students have access to water safe for drinking in schools
