Abstract

This study investigated resilience and parental care as dispositions for deviant behaviour among adolescent in obio/akpor. two research questions and two corresponding hypotheses guided the study. The population of this study comprised all 36,232 SSI - SSIII students in public secondary schools in Obio-Akpor LGA in Rivers State. four hundred (400) students were drawn from the population using Taro Yamen’s formula. the stratified random sampling technique were use to select the students from public secondary schools in Obio/Akpor LGA. Data were collected using Resilience Scale (RS). Parental care Scale (PCS).and deviant behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ). Cronbach alpha was used to check the internal consistency of the instrument to guarantee the use of the instrument for the study and an average reliability coefficient of 0.78. Meanwhile, in the sub-sections, Resilience Scale has reliability coefficient of 0.86, Parental care Scale has reliability coefficient 0.73, and deviant behaviour Questionnaire was 0.72. Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics, PPMC was use to answer the research questions and test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result amongst others revealed a negatively high relationship existed between Resilience and deviant behavour among public secondary school students in Obio-Akpor LGA. This means that, as the scores of Resilience was increasing, the scores of deviant Behaviour was decreasing. The implication is that Resilience will reduce deviant behavour among public secondary school students in Obio-Akpor LGA. The findings also shows that, there is a low relationship between parental care of students and deviant behavour among public secondary school students in Obio-Akpor LGA. This also means that, parenting care or styles will not reduce deviant among students. It was recommended that educational psychologists and  counsellors  should persuade the  students to  avoid engaging in substance abuse, avoid bad company, foster active and participatory learning style, which could trigger their mood and create realistic goals so as to reduce their aggressive tendencies
