The paper examined insecurity and educational development in Nigeria. Specifically, the concept of insecurity and its historical background in Nigeria were also succinctly discussed. The concept of education and development were discussed in line with their challenges and expectations. This was followed with the development programmes and their challenges in Nigeria. It equally looked at education and insecurity experiences so far. The paper further examined the effect of insecurity on the development of education in Nigeria. The role of education as contained in the national policy on education was equally looked into. The two theories that guided the work were structural functionalism theory and conflict theory. The paper concluded with the following recommendations that the present government should enact policy on how best to safeguard the lives of our children in different schools and that there should be an introduction of security education as a subject in the school’s curriculum where security, effects of insecurity, awareness and values in educational institutions and other institutions should be taught our children among others
