Abstract

The macro-economic environment of a country is a crucial factor which determines the performance of an organization. The main objective of the study is therefore to examine the influence of economic factors on organisational performance.  The study adopted the ex-post facto research design. The population of the study comprised quoted basic material and technology companies on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at end of 2016.  The study employed secondary data. The sources utilised include annual financial reports, such as the Statement of Comprehensive Income and the Statement of Financial Position, of the selected companies for the period 2011 to 2016. Secondary data for economic factors were obtained from the Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The study employed ordinary least squares in testing the formulated hypotheses. The study finds a significant effect of the inflation rate on the return on assets, a significant effect of the exchange rate on the return on assets, and a significant effect of the gross domestic product on the return on assets. The study recommends that policies and measures which could trigger economic stability be adopted and implemented in Nigeria. Management should proactively manage their companies, by a careful examination of the strengths/weaknesses and opportunities/threats inherent in the macro-environment and adapt to its changing nature.
