Abstract
This study examined the level of awareness and uses of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in the pursuit of investigative reporting among Council Information Officers in Osun State and to find out if Information Officers discharge their duty as enshrined by the FOI law. An in-depth Interview was used to collect qualitative data. Data were analyzed using the responses gotten from respondents. The study revealed that Information Officers go through oath of secrecy to ensure that government information are protected and this affect the implementation of freedom of information, Information Officer cannot discharge their duty due to the fact that the government pays their salary and they cannot act against the government, it was also indicated that government does not provide enough Training session specifically for Information Officers, and this has affected the performance of Information Officers in respect of the use of FOIA requests. This study concluded that FOIA is a catalyst for accountability, transparency in governance; the study also concluded that the use of FOIA is a necessary component to maintain an open government.
