Abstract
Background: The Boko Haram insurgency in North-East Nigeria continues to undermine food security across the affected communities. Since the escalation of violence in 2012, many affected communities in Northeastern Nigeria have experienced acute and severe food insecurity. Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the impact of boko haram insurgency on food security among residents of two affected communities in Gulani Local Government Area, Yobe State. Methods: The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among residents of Bara and Bularafa communities utilizing qualitative method. A purposive sampling was used to select 50 residents from both communities. Focus group discussion (FGD) and Indepth interview (IDI) guides were developed and used to collect the data. The recorded FGDs and IDI were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically for themes and content. Results: The participants comprised 30 males and 20 females. The discussants affirmed that the boko haram insurgency has affected their nutritional status mainly due to the unavailability of staple food during the insurgency, decline on daily food consumption and quality of staple food available, geometric increase in cost of food prices and inability to access their farms and carry out their daily farming activities. Conclusion: The study participants’ experiential account shows the boko haram insurgency has had detrimental effects on food security among affected communities in North-East Nigeria. Therefore, the study recommends a systematic and holistic approach in putting an end to the boko haram insurgency by the government.
