Abstract
Sustainable rice production and adequate food security is closely tied to relevant information regarding rice cultivation in selected states in the South west, Nigeria. However, previous studies have focused on productivity, innovation opportunities in the rice value chain, cultivation technologies and improvement in rice varieties with little or no attention to the role of information in sustainable rice cultivation. Hence, this study investigated the use of sources and communication strategies by rice farmers in the adoption and cultivation of rice in South west. Nigeria with the view to identifying types of rice adopted for cultivation, and media employed by stakeholders in rice cultivation.
Diffusion of Innovation Theory was adopted for this study. The survey method and in-depth interview were employed for the work. The study population comprised 528 registered rice farmers in three states of the South west distributed as follows: Ondo state- Owo (19), AkureSouth(11) and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo (25); Ekiti State - EfonAlaye (28), Irepodun/Ifelodun (18) and Ekiti West (15); Ogun State - Yewa North (24), Ifo (42), Ewekoro (24) and ObafemiOwode(42). Using Yamane Taro formula, the sample size was 228 rice farmers. The choice of these local government areas was informed by the active and extensive cultivation of rice in these areas. Snowball sampling technique was adopted for the distribution of the questionnaire. Extension Officers and Broadcast Programme Producers were purposively selected for in-depth interview.Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was utilised for data analysis. While data generated from the interview were analysed using the discourse analysis method.
The results showed that farmers were ineffective due to inadequate information on rice cultivation and adoption in the selected states. The foregoing is attested to, by 34.4% respondents who got information from experienced rice farmers through interpersonal (face-to-face) communication channel as against the majority 65% respondents who did not get information via such medium. However, 28.0% of the respondents got information on rice farming practices from radio because of its portability, accessibility and wide coverage qualities. Also, 68.8% of the respondents cultivated FARO 44 variety of rice because of its better yield and high market demand. Out of this figure 33.1% were farmers in Ondo State while 29.3% and 6.4% were respondents in Ogun and Ekiti States respectively. The in-depth interview revealed that, more rural agricultural programmes on rice farming practices aired on radio channels in the selected States were inadequate. Radio and television stations of the selected states concentrated more on other agricultural produce such as maize, cassava, cocoa, millet and plantain cultivation. Besides, results indicated that extension services by the extension workers in the selected states were insufficient to propel farmers to engage in cultivation and adoption of rice because of challenges they faced in the course of their duties (interview report).
Interpersonal (face-to-face) and Radio means of communication remain effective communication strategies for the adoption and cultivation of rice in selected states in South west Nigeria. Therefore, extension workers should intensify efforts to educate farmers on rice cultivation practices through interpersonal means of communication
