Abstract
This study examined emotional abuse and neglect of children as predictors of depressive tendency among adolescents in secondary schools in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. The study adopted a correlation research design. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of the study comprised all the public secondary school adolescents in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. The population consists of 13,715 students in secondary schools in the area. A sample of 1364 students was used for the study representing 10% of the entire population using clustered sampling technique. The instruments titled Emotional Abuse Scale (EAS), Neglect of Children Scale (NCS) and Depressive Tendencies Scale (DTS) were used for data collection. The reliability coefficients of the instruments were .83, .80 and .89 respectively using Cronbach Alpha Method which guaranteed the use of the instruments for the study. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to answer the research questions while the two hypotheses were tested at a probability level of .05 using ANOVA. It was found among others that emotional abuse and neglect of children predict depressive tendencies among adolescent students. It was recommended among others, that government should ensure the employment of adequately trained guidance counsellors in secondary schools. Also, secondary school principals, teachers, educational psychologists and guidance counsellors should have healthy working relationship with adolescent students to ascertain their immediate and future problems.
