Abstract

Finland’s elite sports system has gained international recognition for excellence in endurance disciplines, cross-country skiing, and javelin, supported by a sports culture emphasizing sustainability, health, and equality. This study explores how sports science contributes to the development of Finnish athletes by enhancing training, recovery, and long-term performance outcomes. The integration of evidence-based practices through the Finnish Olympic Committee and university research centers has strengthened athlete preparation, providing access to physiological testing, biomechanical analysis, mental coaching, and other scientific support services. A key feature of Finland’s athlete development framework is the dual-career model, which allows athletes to balance education with high-performance sport while receiving individualized guidance and resources. Despite significant advancements, challenges remain in areas such as the transition of adolescent athletes into elite pathways and the comprehensive integration of sport-specific performance data. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for optimizing athlete progression and sustaining Finland’s competitive advantage in international sports. This study highlights the pivotal role of sports science in Finnish athlete development, demonstrating how structured, evidence-based interventions contribute to performance enhancement while supporting athlete well-being. The findings underscore the need for ongoing innovation, data-driven practices, and holistic support mechanisms to maintain and further Finland’s status as a leader in elite sport.
