Abstract

This study examines the impact of government programmes on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on poverty reduction and socio-economic development outcomes. The study adopted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires with qualitative insights from focus group discussions. Findings reveal that government interventions such as social investment programmes, youth empowerment schemes, and agricultural support initiatives are generally aligned with SDG objectives and have contributed to improved livelihoods, job creation, and financial inclusion among beneficiaries. Despite these positive outcomes, the effectiveness of these programmes is constrained by significant challenges, including corruption, weak institutional capacity, inconsistent political commitment, and inadequate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. The results further indicate that while awareness and participation levels are relatively high, the sustainability and long-term impact of these programmes remain uncertain. The study concludes that government programmes play a critical role in advancing SDG targets in Nigeria but require substantial reforms to enhance efficiency and accountability. It recommends strengthening institutional frameworks, improving transparency, ensuring policy continuity, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration to maximize development outcomes. Addressing these challenges is essential for accelerating progress toward achieving the SDGs and ensuring sustainable and inclusive development in Nigeria.
