Abstract

Water quality is fundamental to environmental sustainability and public health, influencing ecosystem health, biodiversity, and human well-being. This study examines the physico-chemical characteristics of rivers in the Niger Delta, a region noted for its ecological richness and socio-economic dependence on water resources. The Niger Delta’s complex network of rivers, estuaries, and wetlands supports diverse flora and fauna, including numerous fish species and aquatic plants critical for nutrient cycling and food webs. The rivers also provide essential services such as drinking water, fisheries, transportation, and agricultural irrigation. Given these multifaceted roles, monitoring and maintaining water quality is crucial to ensure ecological integrity, public health, and sustainable livelihoods in the region. Findings from this study highlight the need for regular water quality assessment and effective management strategies to safeguard both human and environmental well-being.
