Abstract

This study examines the critical role of public health governing entities in supporting the accreditation of health departments. Since the establishment of local boards of health in the post-independence era, governance has been central to linking communities with public health agencies. With the development of national voluntary public health accreditation programs, particularly the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Standards and Measures, governing entities are expected to engage in leadership, resource stewardship, policy guidance, and continuous improvement. While PHAB does not directly assess governing entities, their involvement in agency readiness, accreditation prerequisites, and quality improvement significantly influences accreditation outcomes. This paper explores how governance functions can be optimized to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of public health accreditation initiatives.
