Abstract

Crude oil pollution is a common and rampant phenomenon in Nigeria especially in the Niger Delta region of the country. Bioremediation has been adjudged the most efficient, economical and environmentally friendly method of crude spill remediation.  The aim of this study is to investigate the use of municipal drainage biosludge as a supplement for the enhancement of crude oil polluted soil bioremediation. One kilogram of impacted soil was collected in nine replicates into perforated plastic vessels labeled (A –I). The impacted soil samples in vessels A – H were treated with 100g, 200g, 300g,, 400g, 500g, 600g, 700g and 800g of characterized   municipal drainage biosludge respectively. The soil in vessel I was not treated (Control). The soil in each vessel was sprinkled with water and thoroughly mixed every four days. Change in Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in each vessel was monitored for a period of five months. At the end of the study, crude oil reduction of  70.59%, 74.92%, 79.17%, 82.88%, 86.08%, 88.98%, 91.70%, 93.78 and 28.33%  was observed in vessels A  -- H and  I  respectively from an initial average concentration of 16,970.57mg/Kg. The results obtained in the study indicate that the municipal drainage biosludge collected from the Niger Delta enhanced the bioremediation of crude oil polluted soil. Hence it is concluded that municipal drainage biosludge from some part of the Niger Delta is a potential supplement for the bioremediation of crude oil polluted soil
