EVALUATION REVIEW OF OCCUPATIONAL EFFECT OF CAR PAINT COMPONENT MIXTURE FUME EXPOSURE ON LUNGS IN OSOGBO METROPOLIS

Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paints are very harmful for the environment and particularly for the painters and paint industry workers who work with them regularly. The most important environmental impact from paints is that they release in to air VOCs during the drying process after the coating is applied. Once in the atmosphere, VOCs participate within the formation of ozone. This can cause some serious hazardous effect on our body like headaches, trigger allergies, asthmatic reactions, irritate skin, eyes, and put increased stress on vital organs. Many studies have proved a reduction in lung functions due to exposure to these agents. The present study aims to assess and compare respiratory symptoms and pulmonary functions among exposed and non-exposed persons as well as suggests controls respectively. The study exposed cases the occupational exposure was found as often (24.7%), sometimes (70.2%) and never (9.1%) while the reported use of airway protection (masks) was very low. The overall respiratory health of the exposed versus controls was reported as excellent (56.7% vs 75.6%), good (29.5% vs 25.5%) and average (20.4% vs 5.5%) respectively. The exposed group on contrary to control one has decreased mean values for FEV1 (5.14 vs 5.70), FVC (8.14L vs 6.45), FEV1/ FVC % (81.80 vs 82.80) and PEF (416.79 vs 525.18). the study recommends interventional plans like education, awareness, good sleep, proper use of safe tools and regular medical checkups should be advocated for workers.
