Abstract
Traditional medicine remains a cornerstone of healthcare systems worldwide, particularly in developing regions where access to modern medical services may be limited. The World Health Organization reports that a large proportion of the global population continues to depend on plant-based remedies for primary healthcare. This reliance has stimulated growing scientific interest in the evaluation of medicinal plants to validate their therapeutic potential and safety. Africa, endowed with rich biodiversity and deep-rooted ethnomedicinal traditions, hosts numerous plant species with promising pharmacological properties. Among these is Irvingia gabonensis, a member of the Irvingiaceae family widely distributed across the rainforests of West and Central Africa. Beyond its nutritional and economic importance, the plant has been traditionally utilized in the treatment of various ailments, suggesting the presence of bioactive compounds with potential medicinal value. This study investigates the phytochemical composition and safety profile of Irvingia gabonensis stem bark extracts through systematic laboratory analyses. Standard phytochemical screening methods were employed to identify the presence of key secondary metabolites, while safety evaluation was conducted to assess potential toxicological effects. The results revealed the presence of several bioactive constituents, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids, compounds known for their diverse pharmacological activities. Preliminary safety assessments indicated that the extracts possess acceptable safety margins within tested parameters. These findings support the ethnomedicinal use of Irvingia gabonensis and highlight its potential as a valuable source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical research and drug development. Further studies involving advanced pharmacological and toxicological evaluations are recommended to fully establish its therapeutic applications.
