Abstract
This study explored factors characterizing failure for Small and Medium Enterprises and fundamentals of environmental scanning in Kogi State. The study employed descriptive research design. Multistage random sampling technique was adopted to apply cluster and select 384 respondents for the survey. The study used descriptive and Binary Logit Regression for data analysis. Findings showed that SMEs failure is attributed to security environment, social health, bad road network, inability to come up with strong business strategy and unavailable finance. The study concluded that environmental scanning is an avenue to identify and avoid the inverse nature of external environmental factors. The study recommended that SME owners and policy makers should address the issues around security environment, social health, bad road network, inability to come up with strong business strategy and unavailable finance as they contribute to SMEs failure in the business environment of Kogi State.
