Global environmental protection has emerged as a critical issue in contemporary international relations, driven by concerns over ecological degradation, climate change, and resource depletion. The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm marked the first major international effort to address these challenges, emphasizing the shared responsibility of humanity under the slogan “Only One Earth.” Despite broad recognition of environmental concerns, political, economic, and developmental differences among United Nations member states have historically complicated the creation of a universal framework for environmental governance. This paper examines key environmental challenges facing the world today, including pollution, deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. It also reviews global and regional initiatives undertaken by international organizations, non-governmental entities, and regional bodies to address these challenges and develop effective regulatory mechanisms. Special attention is given to Africa’s role in international environmental protection, highlighting both contributions and obstacles faced by the continent in implementing global environmental standards and participating in multilateral agreements. The study underscores the importance of coordinated international action and the integration of regional efforts to achieve sustainable environmental management. It concludes that while progress has been made in establishing environmental norms and promoting conservation initiatives, significant challenges remain, particularly for developing regions like Africa, where institutional capacity, policy enforcement, and resource constraints limit the full realization of global environmental goals. Strengthening regional collaboration, increasing public awareness, and enhancing institutional frameworks are identified as key strategies for improving environmental protection outcomes.
