Rural areas serve as the backbone of national economic development in many developing countries, primarily through agricultural activities. In Nigeria, however, inadequate and inconsistently implemented rural development policies have contributed to a persistent pattern of rural-urban migration. This migration is driven by multiple challenges faced by rural communities, including environmental hazards such as flooding, oil spillage, gas flaring, and community conflicts, as well as the adverse effects of climate change and seasonal variations on agricultural productivity. These factors disrupt traditional livelihood activities, reduce farm incomes, and diminish the sustainability of rural economic practices. This study examines the influence of rural-urban migration on urban resources in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. By analyzing the linkages between rural push factors and urban resource demand, the research highlights the socio-economic and infrastructural pressures that migration places on urban centers. The findings indicate that the continuous influx of rural migrants into urban areas strains housing, water supply, sanitation, transportation, and other critical urban services. Moreover, the study underscores the role of effective rural development policies, climate adaptation strategies, and livelihood support programs in mitigating the push factors that drive migration. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the need for integrated rural and urban planning approaches that address the causes of rural-urban migration while promoting sustainable urban resource management. By understanding the dynamics of migration and its impact on urban infrastructure, policymakers and planners can develop interventions that balance rural development and urban sustainability, ensuring equitable growth and improved living standards for both rural and urban populations.
