Abstract

The femur, as the primary weight-bearing bone of the lower limb, is richly vascularized and relies on multiple arterial sources for its nourishment. The distribution, number, and caliber of these arteries critically influence the bone’s vascular supply, supporting both growth and repair processes. Central to this vascular network is the nutrient artery, which enters the femoral shaft through the nutrient foramen and serves as the principal source of blood, especially during periods of active growth. The orientation of the nutrient foramen and canal is typically directed away from the bone’s faster-growing end, reflecting the dynamic longitudinal growth patterns of the femur. Understanding the morphology, number, and anatomical location of femoral nutrient foramina is of significant clinical and surgical importance, as this knowledge can guide orthopedic interventions, minimize vascular injury during procedures, and enhance post-surgical bone healing. This study aims to provide a detailed morphological assessment of femoral nutrient foramina, offering insights into the vascular supply of the femur and informing surgical strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
