Abstract

Monetary policy serves as a critical tool for central banks to regulate economic stability, manage inflation, and influence aggregate demand within the financial system. In Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) implements monetary policy instruments to achieve specific objectives, including price stability, interest rate management, and employment generation. While some policy goals align, others, such as price stability and short-term employment expansion, often conflict, creating challenges for policy execution. The CBN employs instruments such as the bank rate, open market operations, reserve requirement adjustments, and selective credit controls to influence money supply, stabilize wages, and maintain the value of domestic currency. This study examines the effectiveness of monetary policy in enhancing banking efficiency, with a particular focus on turnover ratios in Nigerian commercial banks. By analyzing how policy instruments affect the operational performance of banks, the study provides insights into the interplay between central bank policies and commercial banking efficiency. The findings highlight the importance of coherent monetary strategies in optimizing bank performance and sustaining economic growth.
