Abstract

Al-Shabaab forces have been hypothesized as a key driver to violent extremisms in Northern Kenya. Their role in the persistent violent extremisms in Northern Kenya is not well known and ascertained. Scholars have given little empirical factors which yield a fertile ground for violent extremism. Wajir County being one of the three frontier counties found in expansive Northern Kenya has been facing rising incidences of violent attacks which Al-Shabaab is attributed to be the cause. Proximity of Wajir County to the porous borders of the Somalia could be a factor fueling violent extremism. This creates dilemma that violent extremists may have infiltrated the County. This underpins the need to conduct research in order to explore the role of Al-Shabaab in violent extremism in Wajir County. The specific objective of this study was to investigate the involvement of Al-Shabaab forces in violent extremism and explore mitigation strategies of clans’ conflicts and violent extremists’ infiltration into Wajir County. The study adopted an exploratory research design. The study involved qualitative approach of data collection. In-depth interview to Key Informants (KIIs) were conducted involving face to face interviews. The target population was stratified into clan elders (Degodia, Ogaden and Ajuran), security agents, religious leaders and civil society organizations comprising of 30 respondents. The respondents were selected using purposive and snowball approaches due to the sensitivity of the study. Interview guides were administered to the various respondents. The information obtained in the study was thematically analyzed according to the research objectives. The study found proximity of Somalia border as a force due to its volatility and easy access of weapons to the County. Unemployed youth who are purported to have joined Al-Shabaab easily returned home to support their clans while providing the weapons. Findings from this study will be published to aid in disseminating information on the best ways to mitigate the violent extremism and clan conflict in Wajir County.
