Abstract

This paper examined the socio-cultural and political constraints confronting vocational/technical education, and how the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes through peace education can be used to tackle the problems in Nigeria. The constraints facing vocational education are considered as behavioural and attitudinal in nature, and peace education has the potential to deal with these problems. This is because peace education is significant in influencing behaviours and attitudes of people through the impartation of constructive values which are needed for promoting discipline, critical thinking, innovation and creativity in a society. Therefore, it is the belief of the writers that if peace education is systematically adopted and implemented with regards to this level of education, the thinking patterns and mindset of the people concerned will change for good in the transformation of the system. This will increase the drive on the part of the concerned parties to make tangible contributions for the development of the system. Thus, the acquired values through the process of peace education will encourage participants at this level of education to be proactive and sensitive to the various challenges facing the system for proper actions.
