CLIMATE VARIABILITY ASSESSMENT IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE

Abstract
This study was conducted on climate variability in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This study aimed to analyze the seasonal variability of selected climatic elements, namely, rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine, evaporation, and solar radiation, from 2006 to 2025 in the study area. Data for the study were collated from the weather station at the University of Uyo, Uyo, and analyzed using descriptive statistics for means, standard deviations, and coefficients of variability. The results showed that the highest rainfall months in terms of rainfall amount in Uyo are June and September. The lowest rainfall variability was obtained in November with a CV of 25.62 %, whereas the highest variability was obtained in January with a CV of 134.44 %. The SD values for all months were > 1, indicating a high degree of variability of monthly rainfall from 1 year to another. The lowest temperature variability was obtained in April with a CV of 2.87 %, whereas the highest variability was obtained in February with a CV of 4.99 %. The lowest variability in relative humidity was obtained in June with a CV of 2.29 %, whereas the highest variability was obtained in January with a CV of 14.64 %. The lowest variability in wind speed was obtained in April with a CV of 14.37 %, whereas the highest variability was obtained in May with a CV of 24.22 %. This study has shown evidence of climate variability/change in the Uyo climate zone. Hence, it was recommended, among others, that on-farm adaptation measures, such as planting of trees, mulching, and good drainage systems, should be improved upon by farmers to reduce vulnerability.
