The study examined the relationship between political will and environmental protection/management in Nigeria. Nigeria has made or enacted various policies, laws and regulations in the country such as the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), 1992, Federal Environmental Protection Act (FEPA) 1988, National Environmental Standards Regulations Enforcement Agency Act (NESREA), 2007, etc. In spite of all these regulation, policies and agencies the environmental degradation in the country continued in intensity. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to show that the lack of political will on the part of government and its agencies in the implementation and enforcement of environment related policies, laws and regulations is the major reason for the massive environmental degradation experienced in the country. The study reveals that government and its agencies responsible for environmental protection and management have not mustered the political will to enforce the relevant environmental laws and regulations against violators. Consequently, individuals, organizations, industries, etc., continually violate the environmental laws, regulations and policies with impunity leading to gross environmental degradation. To achieve and enjoy sustainable environment in the country, government and its agencies must summon the courage/political will to enforce all environmental regulations and policies no matter who is involved. Hence, the paper recommended, among others, that government (federal, state and local governments) must muster enough political will to enforce environmental regulations and laws irrespective of which individual or organization is involved.
