Abstract

Domestic felines are susceptible to affections of varied etiology. One of the main respiratory diseases that affects them is the one called Feline Respiratory Complex (FRC), of multifactorial etiology and of world distribution, which produces lesions that are only treated according to the symptoms which can later leave harmful sequels for the animal. The viral agents associated to FRC are feline herpes virus (FHV-1) a commonly pathogen found in small animal clinic, which does not have a definitive and effective treatment, so it becomes necessary to find an effective diagnosis method that allows early detection to avoid its spread. Due to these reasons, this study is a third attempt in parallel to establish a protocol for the molecular diagnosis of FHV-1, through the detection of the UL37 protein gene using conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). With the background of a previous study that detects the UL37 protein gene in canine herpes virus, which proved to be like feline herpes virus in 90%, this diagnostic method could simultaneously detect both viruses. Nevertheless, despite having so much similarity the results of this test by means of this technology were negative, there by establishing the high specificity that the virus has within every host species.
