The diverse nature of countries located in Africa, and the need to fast track development of the continent intensified the urgency of integration measures to bring the various countries together to form a single economic and socio-political block. Consequently, a number of measures including the Abuja Treaty of 1991 which gave rise to the African Economic Community and the African Continental Free Trade Area were implemented. However, these agenda have been faced with several challenges including infrastructural deficit, lack of political will, fragile nature of many African states and other barriers.  While researchers have tried to examine some of these challenges, the impediments posed by differences in trade regulations across Africa and the quest for dominance by larger economies in the continent to the actualization of the agenda have not been addressed. Hence this article argues that the differences in trade regulations have undermined the effectiveness of the African Economic Community and that the threat of dominance by larger economies in the continent impinged on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. The analysis was anchored on game theory while data collection and analysis were based on documentary and qualitative methods. The article recommends aggressive human capacity and infrastructural development among members state to be able to compete favorably and reap the benefits the common market may offer.
