Nigeria is a multilingual, multiethnic and multicultural society. About 520 indigenous languages are spoken by the different ethnic groups in Nigeria.  Prominent among them are Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Given the pluralistic and multiethnic status of Nigeria, socio-cultural, linguistic, economic, political and religious differences and rivalry exist. The rivalry is manifested in lack of trust, ethnic spites, hate speeches, verbal assaults, genocides, marginalization etc. resulting in emergent national security challenges. Language is a means through which people achieve their individual and social needs and satisfaction and Nigeria is richly blessed with plethora of language. Language is recognized as a veritable tool for communication, education, governance, entertainment, worship, commerce etc. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the role of the indigenous language media in the analysis, interpretation and reportage of national, political and religious events and issues to the understanding and appreciation of the different ethnic groups in Nigeria in such a way that harmony, unity and peaceful co-existence will be sustained. Specifically, this study examined the veritable measures to avert ethnic hatred and intolerance in a pluralistic and multiethnic Nigerian society through media reporting in indigenous languages. It also sought to examine the challenges associated with ethnicity in Nigeria; investigate the relevance of linguistic and cultural diversity in Nigerian   pluralistic society; examine the role of indigenous languages mass media in curbing or averting hatred and intolerance in Nigerian pluralistic society. The theoretical framework was built on the Libertarian Theory of the press which focuses on liberty and believes that man is a rational being capable of reasoning and making inputs that would help the society. Literature is reviewed through Library/desk researches on existing records as well as the use of secondary sources like books, journal articles, internet blogs and websites. The findings revealed that the use of traditional and technology- communication media in indigenous languages, press addresses and townhall meetings by prominent and eloquent speakers of the indigenous languages and Nigeria pidgin can assuage the ethnic intolerance. It therefore concludes that the use of indigenous languages and Nigerian Pidgin play a crucial role in assuaging the aggrieved party on issues that could aggravate ethnic hatred and intolerance. The paper also recommended that the media functions of education, information dissemination, socialization and entertainment be done in indigenous languages to conscientize the Nigerian people, foster national consciousness, interpersonal and group interest to a peaceful co-existence. The media should also serve as a conflict mediator in developing a solution to disagreements by creating fora for dialogues, discussion in Nigeria’s indigenous languages and finally reach a consensus
