Abstract
The study evaluated effects of flooding in Akiama market Bonny Island, Rivers State. The purposive sampling was employed in the sample collection of this study in two respective locations of Akiama market. The physiochemical analysis of flood water sample were analysed for turbidity, ph value, appearance/colour,electric conductivity using thermometer,ph meter and volumetric analysis. The bacteriological analysis shows the presence of staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the confirmatory results using biochemical screening. The physiochemical parameters were determined using methods and procedure which include tempreture, total dissolve solids(TDS),electrical conductivity and pH within the acceptable range and standard set by World Health Organization (WHO). The bacteriological results indicates that flood water are not safe for human health and poses health risk to the inhabitants of Akiama in Bonny Island. Sensitization of the masses on the danger facing them will make them take responsibility and join forces with government tackle these menace. Regular cleaning of drainage structures i.e. desalting of drains maybe carried out once in a month should be encouraged. The construction of considerable size of drainage structures that will accommodate large volume of water will facilitate quick reduction of flood water level and discharged to a designated channel /canal /river bank.
