Abstract
This research was carried out to determine the knowledge and practice of, Life Saving Skills (LSS) among nurses/midwives in selected primary and secondary health facilities in Enugu Urban, Enugu State. Four objectives which are to determine the level of knowledge of LSS, to assess the level of practice of LSS, to identify the factors that affect the practice of LSS and to determine the relationship between knowledge of LSS and practice of LSS among nurses/midwives. Based on the objectives, questionnaire which had three sections was developed by the researcher. Extensive literature review was done with empirical review of related studies. A descriptive design was used in the study and a population size of 139 respondents was used and the questionnaire administered to them with 97.2% return rate. The questionnaire was collected analysed in percentages, and presented using tables, pie charts and barchart. Findings showed that majority of the study population had good knowledge of LSS but practice of LSS identified was poor. Shortage of skilled birth attendant was the most identified factor affecting the practice of JS. There was no significant association between knowledge and practice of LSS with P value of greater than 0.05. It was therefore recommended that more regular training in the use of current evidence-based LSS in the prevention of maternal and neonatal mortality be done for nurse/midwives.
