Abstract
This study was carried out to determine breast cancer prevention awareness among women of Akabuka Community in Ogba/ Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, A Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample size of 92 participants. The study employed structured questionnaire. (Fixed - response type close – ended questionnaire) as an instrument for data collection and data collected were analyzed using statistical parameters such as; frequency, bar chart and simple percentage. The findings of the study revealed that majority of women in the study Area are not knowledgeable of breast cancer and even if they are, the excuse of having a busy schedule may be a reason for their inability to practice regular BSE. Also another finding of the study showed that majority of the women believe that the inability to produce breast milk and pus in the breast are the signs of breast cancer and Self or Clinical breast examination still remains the best method of detecting breast lumps. The study further tested the research hypotheses and prove that there was no significant relationship between their knowledge of breast cancer and their practice of breast self- examination, and hence recommended that unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking, alcohol consumption and inactivity (laziness) should be discouraged and adequate awareness on breast cancer causes, preventive, diagnosis and cure are thus important.
