Abstract

Northern Nigeria and more specifically North-East zone in recent times has been affected by surge of violent conflicts which have resulted in the destruction of lives and properties, deserting of communities and forceful displacement of thousands of persons. This sad incidence has brought serious implication with severe consequence to the human capital and its development in the zone.  Substantial decline in rate of interest and poor attitude of the displaced, most of whom are in IDPs camps have been observed to have contributed to the worsened challenges of human capital development (HCD) in zone. The study examined violent conflicts, population displacement and their effect on human capital development among IDPs and addressed the strategic implication of poor (HCD) in the North-East geo-political zone. The study adopted a combination of methods. First, we relied on secondary data drawn from an array of published and unpublished materials relevant to the study; utilizing journals, conference and seminar papers, internet materials, reports and white paper of investigation panel and commission of inquiry of violent conflicts in the zone. Secondly, primary data was generated using a two pronged participation method which combined key informant interview with observation. The interview was intended to enhance precision while the unstructured interview enhanced diversity and allowed for in-depth discussion. In interpreting our data, the relationship between the violent conflicts, population displacement and human capital development was established at both theoretical and empirical levels. Empirically, we used a qualitative and historical method that was critical and analytical in providing descriptive and historical details and providing clear perspective into our research problem. The study established a linkage between violent conflicts, population displacement and the challenges of human capital development in the North-East Zone. Recommendations such as the need for developmental programmes, awareness creation, proper definitions of the goals of human capital development and many more were proffered
