Abstract

This study examines the challenges of the African Governance Architecture (AGA) and why the implementation of its principles has not been effective in Africa and Nigeria in particular within the period under study (2015-2020). The objective of this work is to ascertain how poor funding affects the implementation of the AGA agenda in Nigeria, also how corruption in Nigeria has influenced the poor performance of the AGA policies. This work looks at the effect of ethnicity in the conduct of free and fair elections by the independent electoral commission in Nigerian. The study is anchored on the spirit of democracy theory by L. Diamond.  The qualitative method of data collection was employed, while data analysis was based on content analysis. The study hypothesized that, poor funding affects the implementation of the AGA principles in Nigeria, corruption affects the operations of the AGA in Nigeria and that ethnicity in Nigeria affects the effectiveness INEC in ensuring free and credible elections in Nigeria. The study in its findings argued that, corruption in the society affects the smooth administration of government policies which has become the bedrock of our problems. These corrupt social structures affects the implementation of the AGA principles in Nigeria, also that lack of adequate funding of government programs and policies create room for inefficiency and poor capacity building. It therefore recommends government commitment to its policy implementations, seriousness with the war on corruption and national inclusiveness in the government polity by the government. This will build the nationalist spirit the moves a nation.
