Abstract

Collaboration in the workplace involves individuals working together to solve problems across departments, management levels, and functions. Organizational progress is achieved by having people who are constantly looking for ways to work intelligently, both individually and organizationally. The study examined the effect of sustained collaboration on organizational productivity of commuter firms in Enugu State. The specific objectives include to: Examine the effect of cooperation on efficiency of commuter firms in Enugu State, ascertain the effect of communication on output of commuter firms in Enugu State and examine the effect of Mutual Trust and Respect on market share of commuter firms in Enugu State. The area of study comprised commuter firms in Enugu State. The study used the survey approach. The primary sources are the administration of questionnaire to the management and staff of the manufacturing firms. Out of a population of 645 staff, 242 staff was sampled. The sample size of 242 was chosen after applying the Freund and William’s formula for the determination of adequate sample size. Out of staff sample 240 staff returned the questionnaire and accurately filled. That gave 99 percent response rate. Data was presented and analyzed by mean score (3.0 and above agreed while below 3.0 disagreed) and standard deviation using Sprint Likert Scale. The hypotheses were analyzed using Z-statistic tool with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version. The findings indicated there was positive significant effect of cooperation on efficiency of commuter firms in Enugu State, Z (95, n = 242) = 12.867, p > 0.05, there is positive significant effect of communication on output of commuter firms in Enugu State Z (95, n = 242) = 15.875, p > 0.05 and there is positive significant effect of Mutual Trust and Respect on market share of commuter firms in Enugu State Z (95, n = 242) = 12.805, p > 0.05. It was concluded that workplace collaboration attempts to promote communication, mutual respect and cooperation of employees, all of which contributes to higher productivity. It was recommended that there should be new policies and instruments developed to have better results from collaboration, also, commuter firms should maintain an open line of communication through organizing frequent meetings where employees can express their issues. This enables you to work to resolve problems before they can emerge, thus saving time.
